For families abroad
For families in the Gulf with parents in India
The Gulf is the easiest place in the world to look after a parent in India from: their morning is your early morning, so a check-in call in their language lands on your phone before you leave for work, and anything urgent reaches you while they are awake. Meenira does this in Malayalam, Telugu, Punjabi, Hindi and seven more languages.
The one-and-a-half-hour advantage
Nearly nine million Indians live in the Gulf, more than in any other part of the world, and most of them are only an hour and a half (UAE, Oman) or two and a half hours (Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain) behind their parents. That is the whole difference between the Gulf and the US: a call in your parents' morning is a call in yours.
| Their time (IST) | Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Muscat | Riyadh, Doha, Kuwait, Manama |
|---|---|---|
| 8:30 am | 7:00 am | 6:00 am |
| 10:00 am | 8:30 am | 7:30 am |
| 6:00 pm | 4:30 pm | 3:30 pm |
So the daily check-in can happen at nine in Kerala or Hyderabad and be on your phone at seven-thirty, before the commute. And if something sounds wrong, you hear while your parents are awake and reachable, not at three in the morning.
The languages Gulf families ask for
Kerala sends more of its children to the Gulf than any other state, followed by Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh. Meenira speaks to each of them in their own language:
- Malayalam — with Amma or Ammachi, puttu rather than "breakfast"
- Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi and Hindi, each with its sample call and transcript
If your mother drifts into English or Hindi mid-call, Meenira follows her.
Setting it up from the Gulf
- Sign up with your own UAE, Saudi or Qatari mobile. The code arrives by text or by a call; the summaries go to the same number on WhatsApp or SMS.
- Your parent agrees on their own phone, in their language, by giving you a code. Nothing is dialled before that.
- Pay in rupees. ₹300, ₹500 or ₹800 a month (about AED 13, 22 and 35); international cards are accepted once payments go live. The first month is free and no card is asked for.
- Keep the in-person layer. The neighbour who will knock; a care manager for the monthly visit if your parent lives alone or has a chronic condition. Meenira is the daily layer.
Your community
The Gulf's Indian associations, churches, temples and gurdwaras are the densest diaspora network anywhere; most run WhatsApp groups where a sample call in Malayalam or Telugu will be understood in a sentence. The samples on the languages page can be shared freely.
