A morning call in Hindi, for your Maa.
Meenira rings your mother in India every morning in Hindi — the आप form throughout, Maa (माँ) rather than a generic Amma — chats for a few minutes, and sends you a plain English summary. The call below is a sample voiced for the demo; on a real call she speaks live.
- Meenira
Hello Ma! I'm Ravi's assistant, Meenira speaking. How are you doing this morning?
I'm fine, child, just a little pain in my knees.
- Meenira
Oh? Since when has it been hurting, Ma?
For about two months now.
- Meenira
Two months, okay... And Ma, did you eat something?
Yes, I had some poha and tea this morning.
- Meenira
Very good. I'll let Ravi know about your knee pain. Please take care of yourself, Ma. I'll call you again tomorrow. Goodbye!
Voiced for the demo. On a real call she speaks live and remembers what your parent tells her.
What she gets right
- The form of address. Always आप, never तुम. And the verb agrees with who is listening: आप कैसी हैं to your mother, आप कैसे हैं to your father. Hindi marks this on every sentence, and getting it wrong is the fastest way to sound like a machine.
- The word for mother. Maa (माँ), Mummy, Amma, Ammi — whatever your family says. Tell us at sign-up and she uses it.
- Her own voice. Meenira speaks as a woman, and keeps her own verb forms consistent with that for the whole call.
- Switching. Many Hindi-speaking parents mix in English, or answer in Punjabi, Marathi or Bhojpuri. Meenira follows the language your mother uses and stays there.
How the first call goes
Before any call, your mother receives a message on her own phone, in Hindi, saying who asked for the calls, how often they would come, that the call is written down so you can be told how she is, and a code to give you if she agrees. Nothing is dialled until you enter it.
On the call, Meenira opens by saying who she is — रवि की सहायक, Ravi's assistant — and that the call is recorded. Then: how she slept, whether she has eaten, the tablets after breakfast, and whatever came up yesterday. Two or three minutes. If she would rather not talk today, that is fine.
What you receive
A short message in English after each call — for the sample above it would read: "Maa is fine. Her knees have been hurting for about two months; she had poha and tea this morning. Worth asking about the knee when you ring." — and, if something sounds wrong, an urgent message straight away. On your Home page you can read the whole conversation in Devanagari with an English line under each turn.
